Peytonn Suchor, recognized as April’s Student Success Story
Peytonn Sucher’s story is one of strength, transformation, and second chances. Named Gillette College’s Student of the Month, the welding student proves that no matter where you start, it’s where you choose to go that counts.
In 2019, Peytonn was incarcerated and dealing with a drug addiction. During that time, he made a life-changing decision: to pursue education. “I flourished in there,” he said. “I couldn’t put the past behind me fast enough, and I knew I needed to work on a future. Education was my answer.”
After his release, Peytonn connected with Wyoming Workforce Services, which helped him explore career options. He chose welding—a path that required discipline, focus, and sobriety.
“Construction was familiar, but it came with too many temptations. I needed something new,” Peytonn stated. “Welding gave me the opportunity to be in a better environment.” Since enrolling at Gillette College, Peytonn has embraced the challenge. He attends school full-time, works weekends for a local company, and is a proud father, even welcoming his newborn just weeks ago.
Welding Instructor Christina Redman saw his potential immediately.
“Peytonn takes initiative, helps his classmates, and shows integrity in everything he does,” she said. “He’s committed, responsible, and eager to learn.” Last semester, Peytonn stepped in as a teaching assistant when faculty needed extra support—helping classmates stay on track and keeping the shop running smoothly.
“I’ve learned that when something’s hard, you stick it through,” he said. “I used to start things and walk away. But now, I want to finish what I started—and that includes earning my associate degree.”
While multiple companies have already expressed interest in hiring him, Peytonn is focused on completing his education and possibly returning to the college as an instructor someday. “I’d love to teach. I enjoy helping others and being with my family. That would be the dream,” he said.
His advice for others on the fence about college?
“Don’t be scared to try something new. You might miss—but you might also find the best thing you’ve ever done. That’s what happened to me.”
