Supporting Student Success

Counseling Services

What is Counseling?
Counseling provides you with the surroundings to talk to someone who will help you look objectively at your behaviors, feelings and thoughts in a confidential, non-threatening environment. Counseling is not magic. Effort and energy is required of both the counselor and you.

Length of Counseling
Length of counseling varies. Initial intake appointments are typically 50 minutes in length. Our focus is on short-term treatment directed at helping students improve functioning in a college environment. If our short-term care model cannot adequately meet your needs, we will discuss community referral options with you.

Confidentiality
Counselors are bound both ethically and legally to maintain confidentiality. Personal counseling is confidential within the guidelines set forth by the American Counseling Association Code of Ethics and Wyoming State Statutes. Nothing you share with your counselor is revealed to anyone outside of Counseling Services without your written consent. There are important exceptions to confidentiality such as cases of imminent danger, serious harm to yourself or others, and abuse of children or endangered adults.

Wellness Workshops/Me Maintenance

As we navigate through our lives, mental health typically gets pushed aside, placed in the back seat, or not addressed. Me Maintenance (M&M) is when students can come together and gain insight into coping skills, life management, emotional regulation, and/or other self-care activities to strengthen one’s mental health or well-being.

Also, you will FIND your FAVORITE M&M candy.

M&M is a topic-based, peer-led model. Students can attend any of the sessions throughout the week, covering a wide range of topics, including Anger, Depression, and High-Risk Behaviors (topics covered: substance abuse, vaping, gambling, etc.).

A Gillette College Counseling Services member will assist students in facilitating these weekly sessions. Counseling Services will provide guidance, support, education, and resources for any student.
