Three students will be recognized as the February 2024 Student Success Story at Gillette College. President Janell Oberlander selected Kayla Amos, Colson Kluck, and Gino Burioni as the All-Wyoming Academic Team nominees, sponsored by the Phi Theta Kappa honor society (PTK). PTK is the largest international society for two-year college students. These three students were awarded a $500 scholarship and are now contenders for a spot on PTK’s All-USA Academic Team.
Kayla Amos, a nursing student at Gillette College, continues to strive towards her educational goals despite setbacks and everyday obstacles. Considered a non-traditional student, Kayla commits to driving over 100 miles each day to attend school, all while raising a family. Her tenacity has proven successful since she secured all the required classes and tested into the GCCD Nursing Program within one year. Kayla is an excellent example of how you can always finish what you started.
Colson Kluck, an industrial electricity student, is a prime example of how facing your fear and doing it anyway can lead to great things. Upon applying for the PTK Scholarship and All-Wyoming Academic Team, Colson explained that he was unsure what to do, so he was willing to try a trade and learn skilled labor. With only basic mechanical knowledge on vehicles learned from his father, he enrolled in the Industrial Electricity program. That leap of faith has worked in his favor, as he has already obtained an apprenticeship while he continues school. Colson proves you can get job-ready at Gillette College.
Gino Burioni is a history and general studies student and a goalie on the GCCD men’s soccer team. He comes to Wyoming from France. Not only is he exposed to new cultures by being on the team, but he is also learning new languages, now speaking French, Italian, English, and Spanish, and studying various subjects as a declared general studies student. Gino believes this will help him when he transfers to a four-year institution to pursue a degree in journalism. Here at Gillette College, Gino is building the foundation of his education to transfer seamlessly to another institution.
Finish what you started, get job-ready, and transfer seamlessly – all at Gillette College.
Amos, Kluck, and Burioni will be acknowledged at the Board of Trustees Meeting on February 21 as GCCD’s February 2024 students of the month.
