International Students

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I considered an international student?

International students are applicants who need visas to live and study in the United States.

I/my parents have applied for a green card. Am I still an international student?

Yes. You are still considered an international student until you have the green card and can send us a copy.

Can international students apply to any program at Gillette College?

Yes.

I attended a university after finishing high school (grades 9-12). Can I apply as a first-year student, even if I only have a few credits?

No. Anyone who attended a university or college after finishing high school must apply as a transfer student.

What are the differences between a domestic (U.S. citizen) application and an international application?

All undergraduate applicants use the same application and submit the same admissions materials. However, there are three differences for international students:

  • An English-language proficiency test may be required. However, it can be waived under certain circumstances (described below).
  • Certification of finances is required.
  • Transfer student applicants with international transfer credit (college or university credit completed after high school outside the United States) must submit a course-by-course evaluation of their coursework from foreign universities and official course descriptions.

Do I need to take an English language proficiency test?

All international applicants are required to take the TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo English test unless they meet one of the following waiver requirements:

  • Proof of English proficiency where English is not the primary language of the resident country may be determined in the following manner: TOEFL score of 61 (iBT), or 500 (paper based), or IELTS 5.5, or Duolingo 95, or a combination of a minimum ACT 18 or SAT 510 scores, high school and/or college transcripts review, or professional judgement may be considered under the leadership of the PDSO/DSO and the AVP of Academic and Student Affairs.  The TOEFL code is 4393.
  • All high school instruction in the U.S. and English
  • “A”-level English score of B or higher
  • AP English score of 4 or higher
  • IB English score of 5 or higher
  • Two English Composition courses at a university or college in the U.S., with grades of B or higher in both courses.
  • One English Composition course and one Communications or Critical Thinking course at a university or college in the U.S., with grades of B or higher in both courses.

What are your admission deadlines?

The deadline to submit all necessary documents required for admission to the fall term is July 15th.  The deadline for spring is December 1st

I want transfer credit for my classes at a college or university outside of the United States. Will I receive transfer credit?

Students who attended colleges or universities outside of the United States and wish to attend Gillette College must go through a three-step process, including a required transcript evaluation:

  1. Transcript Evaluation
  2. Translating Transcripts
  3. Submitting Official Transcripts

Transcript Evaluation

International students who attended schools outside of the United States must submit an evaluation of academic records, and this evaluation must be based on official transcripts. Gillette College currently accepts evaluations from the following agencies:

Please request a course-by-course evaluation including a grade point average (GPA). Official copies of the evaluation should be sent directly to Gillette College’s Office of Admission. Your transcripts must be translated into English before an evaluation can be processed.  The educational documentation you will need to submit to these agencies may vary based on the country of study, as well as the highest level of education you have completed outside of the United States. We recommend that you visit the website of your preferred agency to obtain information about what types of documentation are required for submission in order to obtain an evaluation report. Credit will not be allowed in transfer from any school, foreign or domestic, for coursework in English taught as a second language or intended to develop fluency.

Translating Official Transcripts

Transcripts that are not in English must be accompanied by an official English translation. Many schools will be able to accommodate your request to have your transcripts issued in English. If your school is unable to issue official transcripts in English:

  1. You may take your transcripts and diploma/proof of degree to the appropriate verifying institution (i.e. Educational Ministry) to have them translated and notarized. The institution can then send those documents directly to the evaluation service in a sealed, preferably signed envelope. If the institution will only release the verification to you, please request that they put it in a sealed envelope so that you can forward that envelope directly to the evaluation provider; DO NOT open the envelope as that will void the verification. The documents must be received in their original sealed envelope to be considered official.
  2. You may submit your transcripts to a translation service. The translation service can then send those documents directly to the evaluation provider in a sealed, preferably signed envelope. If they send the translation to you, it must be forwarded to the evaluation service in its original sealed state. Again, DO NOT open the envelope as that will void the translation; the documents must be sealed to be considered official. You should also request that an official copy (in your native language) accompany the translation so they can compare the original to the translation.

Submitting Official Transcripts

Submit all official transcripts from all the schools you have previously attended (secondary, post-secondary, college, university, etc.) showing the work you have completed to date.  If you are currently in any courses that you have not completed you may submit an official transcript containing these courses listed as In Progress. Once you have completed these courses, you must submit another transcript with these courses completed and graded. These documents are acceptable for admissions evaluating purposes. To be considered “official” your transcripts must remain sealed by the issuing college or university. If your college or university does not seal their transcripts as a standard procedure, please request that they place your transcripts in a sealed institution envelope and stamp the outside flap with their school seal. Forward these documents directly to the application system; please do not open the envelope as this will void the transcripts.

Do you have scholarships for international students?

Gillette College does not offer full-ride, full cost, or full-tuition scholarships. Therefore, international students, with few exceptions, are expected to provide their own funding in addition to academic scholarships.

Do you know of any other sources for scholarships and financial aid?

Here are some links to scholarships and financial resources for international students. These links are provided for your information. These resources are not affiliated with Gillette College:

Do international students have to pay more tuition than domestic students?

Yes.  International students pay approximately $6,300 more per year in tuition and fees (including room and board)

Do you have financial aid or scholarships for undocumented students?

Gillette College does not offer need-based financial aid to undocumented students.

What is the total cost of attendance? How much do I need to have on my certification of finances?

Estimated Cost of Attendance for International Students can be found here.  The most up-to-date amount will be on the Certification of Finances form.

What is a Certification of Finances? Why do I need to send one? How do I submit it?

All international students requiring an F1 visa must provide Gillette College with a recent financial guarantee or recommendation in the form of a letter or account statement from a financial institution showing the specific dollar amount per year available to you and the duration of its availability. The dollar amount must be converted into U.S. funds. In addition, if your study is sponsored by a government agency, foreign embassy, or private individual (such as a parent), the sponsor must submit a letter to Gillette College indicating they will pay for your studies in the United States. The sponsor must also submit an account statement showing the specific dollar amount per year available to you and the duration of its availability. In addition, the following documents are required for certification of finances:

  • Completed Certification of Finances form.
  • Official copies of bank statements or letters from a bank official showing the availability of funding equal to the dollar amount indicated on the “Statement of Financial Responsibility” form
  • Documents can be emailed to admissions@gillettecollege.org or mailed to:
